’cause the web is f#&%ing awesome!

Sssshhhh!

The premise of this gameshow is you do random, ridiculous, juvenile things to each other. Cradle your buddy’s head in your arm, then viciously pluck out his nosehair. Smack a dude’s ass as hard as humanly possible with a wiffle-ball bat. Get an old guy to come around, who then, after setting his dentures on the table, proceeds to gum the crap out of your friend’s ear.

Naturally, this must all take place in a library, where you can’t make any noise. Ssshhh!!

The Obameter

obameter

PolitiFact.com was an invaluable resource during the primary and general elections for getting at the facts underlying all the mud slinging and craftily-worded campaign rhetoric. Now that Obama has transcended from candidate to executive, PolitFact has turned their attention to tracking how well our new president keeps to his campaign promises.

PolitiFact has compiled about 500 promises that Barack Obama made during the campaign and is tracking their progress on our Obameter. We rate their status as No Action, In the Works or Stalled. Once we find action is completed, we rate them Promise Kept, Compromise or Promise Broken.

So far, it’s at six promises kept, 14 in the works. Not too shabby for having put just one full day in the oval office so far.

Inside Steve’s Mind

First off… this video is NSFW and is way, way wrong in the South Park over the top, taking it one step too far.

BUT, it is freaking brilliant.  Just, brilliant.  And horrifying. And brilliant. If you like gross slapstick humor then you will surely laugh out loud like I did when I stumbled upon it. This was developed by Steve Markel from the show Testees, which I haven’t had a chance to watch.  I will include Episode One to start you off.

Inside Steve’s Mind: Episode Two
Inside Steve’s Mind: Episode Three
Inside Steve’s Mind: Episode Four
Inside Steve’s Mind: Episode Five

We're All Going To Die - 100meters of Existence

The “We’re All Going To Die – 100meters of Existence” project is by Photographer Simon Hogsberg.  He took a picture of 178 people from the same point on a rail road bridge in Berlin over 20 days.  He then linked the photos into a 100 meter long image that you can interact with via an Adobe Flash interface.

Its simple yet utterly beautiful.

The Remnants

I have been an on-again-off-again fan of Ze Frank since his debut with the now classic “how to dance properly“, that god and everybody has seen by now. I used to work at Macromedia, back in the day so anything Flash based tended to float by our desks. Since then I would catch up on his work now and again and most recently saw him open for one of the Macromedia (now Adobe) MAX conferences. Good times.

Ze Frank is featured in a short pilot called “The Remnants” and seeing his name made me check it out. You should too…

The pilot for The Remnants, written and directed by John August. Starring Justine Bateman, Michael Cassidy, Ben Falcone, Ze Frank, Ernie Hudson, and Amanda Walsh. It was shot during the WGA strike in February 2008, using the SAG internet agreement.

The project is currently in development with 60Frames in association with NBC/U, so it could in theory become a series at some point. Either way, we had a good time making it.

How To Make An Origami CD Case

Orgami paper CD case

Have you ever had that situation where a friend hands you a CD they just burned but they don’t have a spare case?  Or maybe you burned it and end up having to stack it on top of another CD?  Sadly, this has happened to me on a multitude of occasions.  Now, thanks to a post about how to make a CD case from a single sheet of 8×11 paper I found, this will never be a problem (unless there is also no paper around).  It will take a few tries to get the step memorized but it is pretty simple and works great.  Ah interwebs, is there nothing you can’t teach me to do?

Dark Was The Night

Its AM here in the Bay and I am catching up on my RSS feeds for the morning when I stumbled onto a link to a new National track via Stereogum.  From there I went to the MySpace page hosting the track and I found the “Dark Was The Night” project, which is working in combination with the Red Hot Organization to help support treatment for HIV/AIDS patients.  The “Dark Was The Night” is a 32 exclusive track compilation coming out on Feb. 16th 2009.  This list is amazing, as Niki put it a “who’s who of indie darlings.”  Here is a list of the acts:

Andrew Bird, Antony + Bryce Dessner, Arcade Fire, Beach House, Beirut, Blonde Redhead + Devastations, Bon Iver, Bon Iver & Aaron Dessner, The Books featuring Jose Gonzalez, Buck 65 Remix (featuring Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti), Cat Power and Dirty Delta Blues, The Decemberists, Dirty Projectors + David Byrne, Kevin Drew, Feist + Ben Gibbard, Grizzly Bear, Grizzly Bear + Feist, Iron & Wine, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Kronos Quartet, Stuart Murdoch, My Brightest Diamond, My Morning Jacket, The National, The New Pornographers, Conor Oberst & Gillian Welch, Riceboy Sleeps, Dave Sitek, Spoon, Sufjan Stevens, Yeasayer, Yo La Tengo

I pretty much own albums from every artist on this list.  My god I am a “Indie pop” whore.  I need to spend some time getting away from “known” bands so that I can refresh my hipster cred.

Poster Boy NYC

I have heard a bit about Poster Boy, mainly just references to him via friends in NYC.  I didn’t take too much effort to review his work at first, mainly because I am not in NYC and what I saw seemed to be him simply covering up exiting ads with his “custom” work.  Dustin recently shared a link via Google Reader that showed Poster Boy at work with his blade and now I have a much better understanding of a) what he does b) how he does it and c) why my friends are all gaga for him.  Check it out:

I am impressed by the simplicity of it and how fast he has to work not to get caught.  I also like the fact that he has an audience, and they clearly are enjoying watching him dismantle and then reconstruct posters using nothing but a razor and a damn good eye.
